What does Jesus plus nothing equal?

Published on: July 22nd, 2024

I recently saw a bumper sticker that read, "Jesus plus nothing equals salvation." This got me thinking because I've heard similar sentiments in responses to my sermons and videos. Some people claim there's nothing we need to do—that it's just Jesus plus nothing. While this makes for a catchy bumper sticker, it's not biblically accurate. Indeed, Jesus came to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10) and shed his blood for the remission of sins (Matthew 26:28). However, nowhere in the Bible does it say that salvation is achieved by simply adding nothing to Jesus. In fact, in Matthew 7:13-14, Jesus emphasizes that the path to eternal life is a singular and narrow way, and few find it.

We encourage all to open their Bibles, be noble, and seek the Bible's truth (Acts 17:11).

What about the thief on the cross?

Published on: July 9th, 2024

When discussing the biblical doctrine of baptism, many people object by saying, "The thief on the cross was saved without baptism, so I can be too." However, if we look to the scriptures, which we must (John 12:48), we find a problem with this argument. The thief lived before Jesus' death, and at Jesus' death, the Old Law was taken out of the way and blotted out, as stated in Colossians 2:14. This marked the beginning of the New Covenant, which Jesus said in Matthew 28:18-20 would last until the end of the world. In that New Covenant, Jesus commanded baptism. The thief on the cross lived before Jesus' death and encountered Jesus directly, which is not something that happens today. The Apostle Paul noted in 1 Corinthians 15:8 that Jesus appeared last to him.

We encourage all to open their Bibles, be noble, and seek the Bible's truth (Acts 17:11).

Do household baptisms authorize infant baptism?

Published on: July 1st, 2024

Household baptisms do not teach that infant baptism is authorized or necessary. The truth is, they do not support this idea. If you look at the subjects of household baptisms recorded in the Bible, you will find that each account includes something that excludes the idea of infants being baptized. For example, in Acts 10:2, Cornelius's household is described as fearing God. In Acts 16:14-15 and verse 40, Lydia's household is referred to as brethren who were comforted by the apostles. In Acts 16:33-34, the jailer's household rejoiced, believing in God after having the word of God spoken to them. In Acts 18:8, Crispus's household is noted for their belief, which is echoed in 1 Corinthians 1:14. Similarly, Stephanas's household devoted themselves to the ministry of the saints (1 Corinthians 1:16, 16:15). Each of these accounts demonstrates that the individuals in these households were not infants, as they were capable of believing and understanding the word of God. The concept of infant baptism was not conceived until over 200 years after Jesus's death. According to Matthew 18:1-3, infants do not need to be baptized because they are pure and free from sin. The promotion of infant baptism is simply an attempt by certain denominations to advance a doctrine not originally part of early Christian teachings.

Are we under the 10 commandments?

Published on: June 24th, 2024

Are we under the Ten Commandments? In past lessons, we've noted rightly that the Old Testament law was taken out of the way, nailed to the cross, and blotted out (Colossians 2:14). Seeking justification by it would sever yourself from Christ and make you fall from grace (Galatians 5:4). We also noted that the Sabbath law specifically is not bound upon us today. One man asked, "If that's so, are we free then to have other gods, commit adultery, lie, steal, or break any of the other Commandments?" Looking at the word of God, we find that the Ten Commandments are part of that which was taken out of the way. In Romans 7:4, the Apostle Paul points out that we are freed from the law by the death of Christ. In verse 7, he specifically notes that the law we are freed from said, "Thou shalt not covet." So, what about the other Commandments that God gave besides the Sabbath law? Are we free from all of those? In a sense, yes, but in another sense, no.

We encourage all to open their Bibles, be noble, and seek the Bible's truth (Acts 17:11).
