God's Word, man's heart

Published on: March 18th, 2024

In our journey through life, we encounter various paths and choices. Amidst this complexity, the psalmist’s wisdom resonates: “Thy word have I hid in mine heart that I might not sin against thee” (Psalm 119:11). The Word of God, when embedded in our hearts, acts as a compass, guiding us toward righteousness.

Consider the writer of Proverbs, who wisely advises: “Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23). Our hearts serve as the wellspring of our actions, influencing how we navigate the world.

An example comes from the Book of Acts. Stephen, a faithful proclaimer of God’s Word, faced opposition from the Jews of his time. When he confronted them with their resistance to the Holy Spirit, they were “cut to the heart.” Their reaction? They stoned Stephen to death, unwilling to heed his message.

In this interplay between God’s Word and the human heart, we find both conviction and resistance. May we choose to embrace the transformative power of God’s truth, allowing it to shape our hearts and guide our lives.

We encourage all to open their Bibles, be noble, and seek the Bible's truth (Acts 17:11).

How can I be pleasing to God?

Published on: March 11th, 2024

How can one be pleasing to God? It's a universal desire to please those we respect and honor, and God is no exception. The Book of Hebrews, in its 11th chapter, makes it clear that pleasing God requires faith. The scripture plainly states that without faith, pleasing Him is impossible. The passage emphasizes that those who come to God must believe in His existence.

However, stopping at mere belief isn't sufficient. James, in the 2nd chapter, verses 17 to 24, underscores that faith without works is dead. In other words, a genuine relationship with God goes beyond mere belief; it involves putting faith into action. This perspective is crucial because, as the passage continues in verse 6, it adds that those who come to God must not only believe in His existence but also acknowledge Him as a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

So, what does it mean to diligently seek God? Examining the context reveals that faith is defined in action. It involves actively pursuing a relationship with God through works and a sincere commitment to seeking Him. In essence, to be pleasing to God, one must go beyond passive belief and engage in a dynamic, faith-driven relationship characterized by both belief and action.

Can I just follow what my preacher says?

Published on: March 5th, 2024

"Can I just follow whatever my preacher says?" Well, the answer is, "Yes, you can." But if you want to understand the problems that arise from that approach, take a look at the religious world. There are numerous different teachings, with each denominational group having its own set of beliefs, resulting in division. However, this is not what Jesus prayed for in John 17. He prayed for unity, emphasizing that oneness is achieved through the word.

Reflect on this: God warns us in 2 Timothy 4 that there will be those who seek out teachers to satisfy their itching ears. This implies that many teachers will simply say what people want to hear to gain followers. However, God has a different plan for us. He directs us to adhere to the enduring words of Jesus, as outlined in Matthew 28:18-20, which are meant to last until the end of the world.

God cautions against changing or deviating from these teachings. It's essential to remain steadfast in the unchanging truth rather than being swayed by the allure of teachings that cater to personal preferences.

What about hope?

Published on: February 27th, 2024

In contemplating the world, one might wonder if God has anything to say about hope. Despite the prevalent despair that people often live amidst, it's challenging to envision a way forward. However, God encourages us to adopt a more optimistic perspective, recognizing Him as our Father and ourselves as His children.

In the book of Hebrews, chapter 6, verses 17-20, it is stated that hope serves as an anchor for the soul—firm and unwavering. This hope extends beyond the veil, where Jesus Christ, our Forerunner, has gone. The hope of Heaven guides us through trials, reassuring us that there is something better awaiting us.

Contrary to the bleak outlook described by Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:29, we are not destined for misery. Instead, we possess a hope that transcends discouragement. As the Apostle Paul emphasizes in Romans 8:24-25, we are saved by a hope that we patiently await. This assurance allows us to trust that all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).

In times of profound sorrow, as addressed in 1 Thessalonians 4:13, Paul comforts those who have experienced the loss of a loved one. He acknowledges the presence of sorrow but emphasizes that our sorrow is not without hope. Even in the depths of despair, there is a certainty that everything will ultimately work out positively.
